Common AC Problems We Address in Monticello

Air conditioning systems are complex, and a variety of issues can lead to a breakdown. Our technicians are skilled in diagnosing and resolving all types of AC problems, ensuring we identify the root cause for a durable repair.

AC Not Blowing Cold Air

One of the most common and alarming issues is when your AC runs but the air coming from the vents is warm or room temperature. This can be caused by several factors, including low refrigerant levels due to a leak, a dirty condenser coil that can't release heat, or a failing compressor, which is the heart of your system. Our diagnostic process involves checking refrigerant pressures, inspecting coils, and testing the compressor to pinpoint the exact failure.

System Freezing Up

Discovering ice on your air conditioner's coils or refrigerant lines is a clear sign of trouble. This is typically caused by restricted airflow from a clogged air filter or blocked vents. It can also indicate a refrigerant leak. Running a frozen AC can cause severe damage to the compressor. We will first allow the unit to thaw completely before identifying and correcting the airflow or refrigerant issue to prevent it from happening again.

Unusual Noises or Odors

Your air conditioner should operate with a relatively quiet hum. Loud grinding, squealing, or rattling noises often point to mechanical problems like a failing motor, worn-out bearings, or loose components. Musty odors can signal mold or mildew growth in the ductwork or on the evaporator coil, while burning smells may indicate an electrical issue. We meticulously inspect the system to locate the source of the noise or odor and perform the necessary repairs to ensure safe operation.

Water Leaking from the Indoor Unit

Water pooling around your indoor air handler is usually a sign of a clogged condensate drain line. As your AC dehumidifies the air, it produces condensation that is meant to drain away. If this line becomes blocked with algae or debris, the water backs up and overflows. Our service includes thoroughly clearing the drain line and ensuring proper drainage to protect your home from water damage.

AC Cycling On and Off Frequently

If your system turns on and off in short, frequent bursts, it's known as "short cycling." This not only prevents your home from cooling properly but also puts excessive wear and tear on components and drives up energy bills. Short cycling can be caused by an oversized system, a refrigerant leak, or a faulty thermostat. Our technicians will diagnose the cause and recommend the most effective solution.

Our Professional AC Repair Process

We believe in transparency and keeping you informed every step of the way. Our repair process is designed to be straightforward and stress-free.

  1. Thorough Diagnosis: Our certified technician will arrive at your home and conduct a comprehensive inspection of your entire AC system. We use advanced diagnostic tools to accurately identify the root cause of the problem, not just the symptoms.
  2. Clear Explanation and Upfront Estimate: Once the issue is identified, we will explain the problem to you in clear, understandable terms. We will outline the available repair options and provide a detailed, upfront estimate for the work. You will have all the information you need to make an informed decision.
  3. Expert Repair: With your approval, our technician will proceed with the repair. We use high-quality parts and adhere to the highest industry standards to ensure the work is done right the first time. Our service vehicles are well-stocked, allowing us to complete most common repairs in a single visit.
  4. System Testing and Verification: After the repair is complete, we don’t just pack up and leave. We test the entire system to ensure it is operating at peak performance and providing the cool air you expect. We will also check thermostat settings and airflow to confirm everything is working correctly.

Deciding Between AC Repair and Replacement

A significant system failure often leads to the question of whether to repair or replace the unit. Several factors influence this decision, and we are here to provide honest guidance.

When Repair is Often the Best Choice:

  • The Unit is Young: If your AC system is less than 10-12 years old and has been well-maintained, a repair is usually the most cost-effective option.
  • The Repair is Minor: Issues like a faulty capacitor, a clogged drain line, or a thermostat replacement are relatively inexpensive and can add years of life to your system.
  • The Unit is Still Under Warranty: If a major component like the compressor or coil is still covered by the manufacturer's warranty, repairing the unit is almost always the right call.

When Replacement May Be a Wiser Investment:

  • The Unit is Old and Inefficient: An AC unit over 12-15 years old is likely far less efficient than modern models. A new system can significantly reduce your monthly energy bills, helping to offset the initial investment.
  • The Repair is Costly: A common rule of thumb is the "$5,000 Rule." If the cost of the repair multiplied by the age of the unit (in years) exceeds $5,000, replacement is often the more financially sound decision.
  • Frequent Breakdowns: If you find yourself calling for repairs every cooling season, the cumulative cost and inconvenience can outweigh the price of a new, reliable system.
  • The System Uses R-22 Refrigerant: R-22 has been phased out due to environmental concerns. While still available, it is extremely expensive, making major repairs like a leak fix or compressor replacement on an R-22 system prohibitively costly.

Maya was awesome and patient with us and the bank. Stratton, Wilton, and Austin did the removal and install of the systems and they were professional and proficient. I will be recommending this company to everyone and anyone! Thank you for making this less stressful then it needed to be. I'm very grateful for the help and comfort they have given me and my family.

We’ve had issues with our a/c unit freezing up off and on for a month or so. Aden from Keith Key came out and checked our system out. He fixed an issue with the bypass valve and also tuned our fan. Additionally we also replaced our thermostats with new T10’s. He took his time and helped me connect all of them to the WiFi and the app.Aden is very friendly and knowledgeable. I haven’t had an issue with my system since. He was also willing to accept the assistance of our overly helpful shih tzu. Call Keith Key and Aden for any issues with hvac systems, they can get it fixed!
