- Clogged filters. Starving the system of airflow freezes coils and strains the blower motor.
- Wrong sizing. An oversized system short-cycles — constant starts and stops wear out components and never wring the humidity out. An undersized one never stops running.
- Leaky ductwork. The system works overtime to make up for cooled air lost into the attic or crawlspace.

- Repairs are getting more frequent — and bigger (compressor, coil, refrigerant leaks rather than capacitors and contactors).
- It uses R-410A or older R-22 refrigerant and has a major leak — with the industry moving to newer refrigerants, repairing older systems keeps getting less economical.
