Why Is My AC Running But Not Cooling? The 7 Causes We See Most in North Florida

The system hums, air moves, but the house won't cool down. Before you sweat through another Panhandle afternoon, here are the seven causes our techs find most — and which ones you can check yourself.

Quick answer: When an AC runs but doesn't cool, the most common causes are a clogged air filter, a dirty or blocked condenser coil, a refrigerant leak, a frozen evaporator coil, a failing capacitor, leaky ductwork, or a thermostat problem. You can safely check the filter, the outdoor unit, and the thermostat yourself; refrigerant and electrical issues need a licensed technician.

This is one of the most common calls we get across Wakulla, Leon, and Franklin Counties from May through September — and after 30+ years in the field, we can usually predict the cause before we open the panel. Here's the same checklist our technicians run, in the order worth checking.

1. Clogged Air Filter (Check This First)

A packed filter chokes airflow, so the system runs constantly but moves little air. In Florida homes running AC most of the year, filters clog faster than the "every 90 days" advice printed on the box — especially with pets. Check it monthly in summer. If it's gray and matted, replace it and give the system a few hours.

2. Dirty or Blocked Condenser Coil

Your outdoor unit has to reject heat. If its coil is caked with grass clippings, oak pollen, or dirt — or shrubs have grown within a couple feet — it can't. Shut power off at the disconnect and gently rinse the coil with a garden hose (not a pressure washer). Keep 2–3 feet of clearance around the unit.

3. Refrigerant Leak

Low refrigerant means weak cooling, long run times, and sometimes a hissing sound or ice on the copper lines. This is not a DIY item — refrigerant handling requires EPA certification, and simply "topping off" a leaking system wastes money. The leak needs to be found and fixed, and with older refrigerants being phased out, a significant leak on an aging system is often the moment to run the repair-versus-replace math.

4. Frozen Evaporator Coil

If the indoor coil ices over (weak airflow, ice on the line set, water around the air handler when it thaws), the system can run for hours without cooling. Freezing is a symptom — usually of restricted airflow or low refrigerant. Turn the system off, let it thaw, replace the filter, and if it freezes again, call us.

5. Failing Capacitor or Contactor

If the indoor fan runs but the outdoor unit hums, clicks, or won't start, a failed capacitor is the classic culprit — Florida heat is brutal on them. It's a quick, inexpensive fix for a technician, but the diagnosis matters: a capacitor that keeps failing is often covering for a compressor that's overamping.

6. Leaky or Disconnected Ductwork

In our area's attics and crawlspaces, ducts sag, split, and pull loose. You get cold air — delivered to the attic instead of the living room. Telltale signs: one hot room, weak airflow at vents, and power bills that don't match your comfort.

7. Thermostat Problems

Dead batteries, a failed sensor, or a thermostat mounted in direct sun or near a lamp can all make a healthy system behave badly. Check settings (COOL, fan on AUTO), replace batteries, and make sure nothing warm sits nearby.

When to Stop Troubleshooting and Call

If the filter is clean, the outdoor coil is clear, the thermostat checks out, and the house still won't cool — or you see ice, hear electrical buzzing, or smell anything burning — stop there. Those point to refrigerant or electrical faults that need a licensed technician.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my AC only struggle in the afternoon?

Peak heat load exposes marginal systems. A unit with a dirty coil, low charge, or undersized capacity can keep up at 85°F but falls behind at 95°F. If it happens daily, the system is telling you something — have it inspected before it fails outright.

Should I keep running the AC if it isn't cooling?

No — if it's not cooling, shut it off. Running a frozen or low-charge system can destroy the compressor, turning a modest repair into a replacement.

How fast can you get to me?

We prioritize no-cool calls during summer, across all three counties. Call (850) 926-3546 — members on our maintenance plan get priority scheduling.

I have nothing but great things to say about this company! From the initial call to trouble shoot our old system to the installation of the new system. Maya was awesome and patient with us and the bank. Stratton, Wilton, and Austin did the removal and install of the systems and they were professional and proficient. I will be recommending this company to everyone and anyone! Thank you for making this less stressful then it needed to be. I'm very grateful for the help and comfort they have given me and my family.

We’ve had issues with our a/c unit freezing up off and on for a month or so. Aden from Keith Key came out and checked our system out. He fixed an issue with the bypass valve and also tuned our fan. Additionally we also replaced our thermostats with new T10’s. He took his time and helped me connect all of them to the WiFi and the app.Aden is very friendly and knowledgeable. I haven’t had an issue with my system since. He was also willing to accept the assistance of our overly helpful shih tzu. Call Keith Key and Aden for any issues with hvac systems, they can get it fixed!
